If you are new to the world of coding and computers, chances are you have asked yourself this question a multitude of times for various programming languages. And although it’s not a “programming language” in the traditional sense, HTML is no different. As the tech world rapidly evolves and new and improved tools with shiny, already built-in AI features become readily available to users, it almost seems like languages such as HTML are becoming less important. However, I would argue that this isn’t actually true. While learning just HTML on it’s own won’t land you a job in tech, it can certainly strengthen your skills and provide a solid base to expand on. In this article, I will give you 4 reasons why HTML is still worth learning in 2025.
1. HTML is the foundation for the internet
Nearly every website you visit relies on some form of HTML. It’s essentially the skeleton of the internet. CSS just makes it pretty, and JavaScript makes it do things. HTML is the part that gives everything a solid structure.
If you ever want to customize a website beyond prebuilt templates, you will likely need to know at least a little bit of HTML. Platforms like WordPress and Wix still generate or use HTML code “under the hood”.
2. AI will never replace genuine human understanding
This is more general programming advice, but it heavily applies to HTML.
AI can do many wonderful things on it’s own, but often it requires a bit of supervision when it comes to more advanced topics. Even if you are using AI to help you write HTML, you will still need to understand the basics of debugging and fixing your (and even ChatGPTs) errors.
3. HTML is incredibly beginner-friendly
When my young students (I’m a math tutor) seem curious about programming and where to start, I often tell them they should look up a tutorial on HTML/CSS and go from there. I also started learning from the HTML/CSS combination at the ripe, young age of 15. While my first couple of projects weren’t beautiful, they were mine and it made me EXCITED!
I genuinely believe that HTML is a great first step into the world of coding, and although it’s just a markdown language, it can teach you many basic skills required in other, more advanced languages. There are developers who also strive to make HTML more accessible and readable with tools like Semantic HTML and Aria attributes.
4. HTML provides a solid base to learn and expand from
Again, no one is trying to tell you that learning HTML (even with CSS and JS) alone will land you a job in tech. However, it can provide solid foundational knowledge that will make it easier to learn other languages. HTML teaches you to become comfortable with syntax and how computers interpret things through the DOM.
Another thing is you gain a bit of confidence if you build your skills up from the bottom. If you jump into a complicated language like Rust and expect to make a perfect product every time, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment and failure.
Final Thoughts
So…is HTML still worth learning in 2025? Absolutely!
Especially so if you are new to the world of programming since it can provide you fundamental knowledge of how webpages work which can be applied to other languages down the road. Even still, if you are not new, a refresher in HTML could be a nice break and a reminder of good coding practices.
